Our Story
What happens when you don’t have an answer to someone’s call for help? That desire to help turns into a vision. That is how The Open Door of Delta, Inc. was founded. The concept was to bring together services for the community, and house them under one roof. This would allow community members easier access to assistance programs. Funding this dream would be a Thrift Store, that would also give our community an affordable place to shop. In December of 2003, The Open Door of Delta, Inc. was established as a 501(c3). They opened their doors to the public in May of 2004. True to the founder vision we are still a grassroots organization that is governed by the board of directors.
Presently, The Open Door operates various programs, to support the community needs. We offer 6 programs 5 days a week and 9 other services that operate at a specific season of the year. A large amount of funding still comes from the Thrift Store revenue. Additionally, we do write grants and take special funding and monetary donations to help with our costs.
How can we offer all these services in a smaller rural community? The biggest factor is through our dedicated volunteers and limited staff. Currently we have 60 plus volunteers who give over 15,000 hours of service to process donations and cashier or bag in the Thrift Store. Currently we employee one full time and 6 part time staff. Our staff is cross trained in various area to effectively assist everyone.
