Helping Families Stretch their Resources

Summer Lunch Program

The Open Door of Delta has been delivering lunches to designated neighborhoods in Delta, since 2017. Over a period of about 2 months in the summer The Open-Door volunteers, Delta teachers and other community supporters pack and deliver lunches to the children. Delta United Methodist Church and Trinity Lutheran Church joined with us to feed children and their caregivers 5 days a week.

This program is one of the most rewarding and eye opening we do. If you want to find out how to get involved call 419-822-0199

School Supplies

After several phone calls inquiring where someone could get help with school supplies, we answered the need by suppling basic school supplies and backpacks. Now kids are ready to start the year off with right with school supplies in hand. Families that are in need of supplies have to contact us and fill out a short form to qualify for the school supplies.

Hat and Mitten Tree

Each year a Christmas tree is placed in the lobby area of The Open Door of Delta. Needed winter items such as mittens, hats, scarfs are placed on the tree for families to take, keeping little fingers, toes and noses from getting cold.

Books, Books and Books

We often get a call or see someone asking for children and adult books. These books can be for birdhouse libraries that are popping up in smaller communities, sent to area where school libraries were lost or even to a dialysis center for people to read while receiving treatment. We support these efforts by donating books of all kinds for these efforts. A book in the hand of a child is priceless.

Clothes and More

So many circumstances arise when individuals and families find themselves needed clothing. It can be for a new job, school starting or just fallen on hard times. We can assist by giving vouchers for our thrift store to give them the dignity of shopping for themselves. We can also assist with various other needs like shoes, household goods and furniture.

Caregivers

Teachers and school nurses often place the call of help for children. We lend a hand by supplying needed clothing, shoes, coats, hats, and personal care items to the area schools, allowing children to be part of all the school activities.

Community Assistance

The Open Door of Delta offers assistance to the community in many different ways. When a family loses their belongings in a fire or a parent and children flee a domestic violence situation with only the clothing on their backs, we can help with clothing, household goods, cleaning supplies, personal care/bath supplies and food. Individuals in need of help with clothing for school or a job interview and don’t have the means to buy them, we can assist them from our store.

Other Agencies

The Open Door also houses other nonprofit organizations within our building at no charge. This allows the community to access assistance from several organizations in one convenient location. NWOC, Job Fairs, Community informational meeting.

Resource Center

There are many needs in our community, some of which we cannot always meet on our own. We work with other agencies to meet the needs of all who come to us for assistance. This may be done by a referral to another agency that has a program that would fill a need, or making calls to find out the best way to assist someone. Identifying needs in our community and figuring out ways to meet them is a large part of our organization.
