One Man’s Vision

What happens when you don’t have an answer to someone’s call for help? That desire to help turns into a vision. That is how The Open Door of Delta, Inc. was founded. The concept was to bring together services for the community, and house them under one roof. This would allow community members easier access to assistance programs. Funding this dream would be a Thrift Store, that would also give our community an affordable place to shop. The seed was planted and the next step was to find a building to serve these needs.

Building the Vision

In 2003, a core group of people heard the call and the vision took root. In 2004, a dedicated group of volunteers turned what was once a grocery store into The Open Door of Delta, Inc. With faith and belief from community members and volunteers who truly took on the mission of “committed to serve”, the building took shape. The first area to open was The Delta Community Outreach and food pantry. Next, the thrift store opened, selling goods when enough product became available and volunteers could be found. Today that Thrift Store has moved to a much larger location on Main St and is operated by a thriving group of volunteers. It is opens 6 days a week and has blossomed with the support of the community.

Fulfilling the Vision

The board of The Open Door of Delta, Inc, looks at the community and the people we serve. The growth to our organization’s facilities was a response to address community needs. In 2010 an addition was added, to house a shelter (The Transition Center) 2016 a retail building on Main Street was purchased to increase the space of our Thrift Store. Through both of these additions to our original facility, we have flourished allowing us to offer more services and bring needed programs to the community. The vision of our founder is still rooted deep in our organization today. We are “committed to serve”.
